A Resolution congratulating and commending Sister Jane Albert Mehrens upon her re-

tirement as Director of Catholic Community Services in Leavenworth.

�WHEREAS, Sister Jane Albert Mehrens left her home state of Mon-
tana and entered the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth in 1955. Later,
she earned a degree in elementary education at St. Mary College in Leav-
enworth; and

�WHEREAS, Sister Jane Albert taught in elementary schools in the
West and the Kansas City area for 32 years, including St. Ann's in Prairie
Village and St. Patrick's in Kansas City, Missouri. She motivated her stu-
dents to become actively involved in social issues of the poor and the
needs of their communities; and

�WHEREAS, In July, 1989, Sister Jane Albert became Director of Cath-
olic Community Services in Leavenworth. For the past eleven years she
has been a leader and an advocate of the poor, the homeless and those
in need. She initiated a special project founding four transitional housing
sites in Leavenworth, two of which are at the Veterans Administration
Center; and

�WHEREAS, Sister Jane Albert has been a friend, a supporter and a
collaborator with many helping organizations in the area, including,
Mother to Mother, the Salvation Army, the Assistance Center, the Alli-
ance Against Family Violence, and the St. Vincent Clinic. Her new mis-
sion will be to care for her mother in Denver, Colorado: Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate of the State of Kansas: That we congratulate
and commend Sister Jane Albert Mehrens, SCL, for her 43 years of gen-
erous and creative leadership in education and in the service of others;
and

Be it further resolved: That the Secretary of the Senate be directed to
provide five enrolled copies of this resolution to Senator Biggs.
