10 A CONCURRENT
RESOLUTION requesting local boards of education
11 to review truancy
policies and procedures to establish a more uniform
12 statewide policy
regarding truancy.

14 WHEREAS, The
Legislature of the state of Kansas has recognized and
15 addressed the issue of truancy in the past;
and
16 WHEREAS, The
Legislature of the state of Kansas and the state social
17 service agencies have recognized that
truancy is an early sign of behavioral
18 and other dysfunctional problems; and
19 WHEREAS, The
Legislature of the state of Kansas believes that local
20 school boards within each school district
should review each board's tru-
21 ancy policy and procedures in collaboration
with representatives from
22 child protective services of the department
of Social and Rehabilitation
23 Services, the courts and the district or
county attorney within the school
24 district regarding the problem of truancy
thereby benefiting both the
25 schools and truant students by creating a
more uniform enforcement of
26 the state's truancy laws: Now,
therefore,
27 Be it resolved by
the House of Representatives of the State of Kansas,
28 the Senate concurring
therein: That the local boards of education review
29 their truancy policy and procedures in
collaboration with representatives
30 from child protective services of the
department of Social and Rehabili-
31 tation Services, courts and each board's
district or county attorney re-
32 garding the handling of truant students;
and
33 Be it further
resolved: That after assessing each board's policy re-
34 garding the handling of truant students,
the local boards of education
35 within each school district in conjunction
with the department of Social
36 and Rehabilitation Services, courts and
district or county attorney within
37 that school district is directed to develop
and establish a more uniform
38 policy for handling truant students
throughout the state of Kansas; and
39 Be it further
resolved: That each local board implement the uniform
40 policy in its district; and
41 Be it further
resolved: That the Secretary of State be directed to
send
42 an enrolled copy of this resolution to each
school district and the Gov-
43 ernor of the state of Kansas.
