11 AN ACT
concerning the state fossil.

14 WHEREAS, The
state of Kansas is only one of nine states that does
15 not have a state fossil; and
16 WHEREAS, A state
fossil would provide educators with a creative,
17 interesting and valuable tool to educate
students and motivate them to
18 learn about other fossils; and
19 WHEREAS, The
Pteranodon, with its powerful wings, dominated the
20 Kansas skies during the Mesozoic Era of the
Cretaceous Period; and
21 WHEREAS, The
fossil, Pteranodon, is easy to recognize, highly valued
22 by fossil collectors, significant to the
scientific community and represents
23 the geologic history of Kansas; and
24 WHEREAS, Kansas
has a rich history of flight, and the fossil Pteron-
25 odon, with its powerful, strong
wings and endurance, is a perfect fossil to
26 symbolize Kansas' powerful impact on the
world through aviation. It
27 would be an excellent choice as the Kansas
state fossil: Now, therefore,

29 Be it enacted by the Legislature of the
State of Kansas:
30 Section
1. The fossil, Pteranodon, is hereby designated and
declared
31 to be the official fossil of the state of
Kansas.
32 Sec. 2. This act shall
take effect and be in force from and after its
33 publication in the statute book.
