9 AN ACT
concerning teacher education institutions; imposing certain
10 requirements.

12 Be it enacted by the Legislature of the
State of Kansas:
13 Section
1. (a) As used in this section, the term "school" means
any
14 school maintained by a school district
organized and operating under the
15 laws of this state and the term "teacher
training program" means any
16 academic curriculum designed to train
students to become licensed
17 teachers.
18 (b) Each teacher
education institution on the accredited list main-
19 tained by the state board of education in
accordance with the provisions
20 of K.S.A. 72-1371, and amendments thereto,
shall:
21 (1) Provide
remediation in pedagogy or subject matter for graduates
22 of that teacher education institution who
have been determined by the
23 school in which the graduate is a paid
teacher to be performing poorly.
24 The graduate must:
25 (A) Be a graduate
of the teacher training program at the teacher
26 education institution;
27 (B) have received
a degree within the last five years; and
28 (C) not have
obtained a five-year teaching license.
29 (2) Report to the
public the percentage of teacher education gradu-
30 ates who pass the examination required
under K.S.A. 72-1394, and
31 amendments thereto, and the rate of placing
such graduates in teaching
32 positions.
33 (c) The state
board of education shall monitor compliance of teacher
34 education institutions with the
requirements imposed upon teacher ed-
35 ucation institutions by this section. Upon
the failure of a teacher educa-
36 tion institution to comply with such
requirements, the state board may
37 apply penalties as prescribed by rules and
regulations applicable to ac-
38 creditation of such institutions.
39 Sec. 2. This act shall
take effect and be in force from and after its
40 publication in the statute book.
