A Resolution congratulating and commending the Washburn Rural High School band.
WHEREAS, The Washburn Rural High School Marching Jr. Blues,
Banner Squad and Pom Pom Corps traveled to France to participate in
the Parade de Paris and Parade de Chantilly over the period December
27, 1997, to January 3, 1998; and
WHEREAS, The band was one of only 17 groups in North America
receiving invitations to these events, such invitation being based upon the
band's excellent ratings in marching, concert, jazz, solos and ensembles
and upon the recommendations of judges who had evaluated the band
and band directors whose bands had participated in the parades; and
WHEREAS, The Parade de Chantilly was viewed by an estimated
4,000 persons and the Parade de Paris by an estimated one million per-
sons. French television broadcast the parades to all of Europe. The Wash-
burn band was chosen to lead the Parade de Paris and closed the Parade
de Chantilly. The band gave a short performance at the steps of the
Basilique du Sacre-Coeur in Paris and at the gardens of the Chateau de
Chantilly; and
WHEREAS, One hundred twenty students and 16 sponsors partici-
pated in the trip. Another group of parents and siblings traveled with the
group. The participants were also able to enjoy touring of historical locales
while on the trip: Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate of the State of Kansas: That we congrat-
ulate and commend the Washburn Rural High School band and its suc-
cessful trip to France; and
Be it further resolved: That the Secretary of the Senate be directed
to send an enrolled copy of this resolution to Clifford Manning, Band
Director, Washburn Rural High School, 5900 SW 61st, Topeka, Kansas
66619.
