A Resolution congratulating and commending Marilyn Layman.
WHEREAS, Marilyn Layman, Superintendent of the DeSoto School
District, has been named the 1998 Kansas Superintendent of the Year by
the Kansas Association of School Administrators and is a candidate for
1998 national superintendent of the year; and
WHEREAS, Marilyn Layman, the first woman to be named Kansas
Superintendent of the Year, has been Superintendent of the 2,500 student
district since 1991 and during its transition from a mostly rural school
district to a suburban district; and
WHEREAS, Marilyn Layman oversaw the modification and approval
of a 37.6 million dollar bond issue after a 57.5 million dollar proposal was
earlier rejected by district voters; and
WHEREAS, Marilyn Layman's ability to bring together the diverse
populations of the district has resulted in turning a district not known for
progress to one on the cutting edge; she says the involvement of the
teachers, support staff, pupils and parents of the district has made her
job easy: Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate of the State of Kansas: That we congrat-
ulate and commend Marilyn Layman upon being named the 1998 Kansas
Superintendent of the Year; and
Be it further resolved: That the Secretary of the Senate be directed
to send an enrolled copy of this resolution to Superintendent Marilyn
Layman, Unified School District 232, P.O. Box 449, DeSoto, Kansas
66018-0449.
