A RESOLUTION encouraging school systems in
Kansas to adopt the
10 Eddie Eagle Elementary
Gun Safety Education Program of the Na-
11 tional Rifle
Association with the view to preventing accidental firearm-
12 related injuries to
children and for other purposes.

14 WHEREAS, Teaching
children to act safely around firearms is a crit-
15 ical step in the effort to reduce the
number of firearm-related accidents
16 among children; and
17 WHEREAS, The Eddie Eagle
Elementary Gun Safety Education Pro-
18 gram teaches the fundamentals of firearms
safety to children in an effec-
19 tive and enjoyable way, communicating to
them the lifesaving message
20 offered by the program: ``If you see a gun,
STOP Don't touch. Leave the
21 area. Tell an adult.''; and
22 WHEREAS, The
nationally-recognized Eddie Eagle Elementary Gun
23 Safety Education Program has been used by
more than 10,000 public or
24 private schools and law enforcement
agencies, and has reached over 10
25 million children since 1988; and
26 WHEREAS, The Eddie Eagle
Elementary Gun Safety Education Pro-
27 gram has been presented the 1994 Golden
Achievement Award of the
28 National School Public Relations
Association, the 1995 National Educa-
29 tion Award of the American Legion, and the
1996 Award of Merit from
30 the National Safety Council's Awards &
Recognition Committee of the
31 Youth Activities Division; and
32 WHEREAS, The House of
Representatives of the State of Kansas also
33 encourages civic activists and community
volunteers to adopt and pro-
34 mote this important program: Now,
therefore,
35 Be it resolved by the
House of Representatives of the State of Kan-
36 sas: That, in recognition of
the facts contained in the preamble of this
37 resolution, the House of Representatives
encourages civic and community
38 service organizations which are concerned
about the safety and well-being
39 of the children of our state to help
provide funding for the Eddie Eagle
40 Elementary Gun Safety Education Program at
the local level; and
41 Be it further
resolved: That the House of Representatives hereby en-
42 courages the State Board of Education to
promote the use of the Eddie
43 Eagle Elementary Gun Safety Education
Program in our schools to help

1 prevent firearm-related accidents
among children; and
2 Be it further
resolved: That the House of Representatives commends
3 the National Rifle Association for
its diligence and service in developing
4 the Eddie Eagle Elementary Gun Safety
Education Program and making
5 it available for use in our
communities; and
6 Be it further
resolved: That as a formal expression of the sentiment
7 of the House of Representatives the
Chief Clerk of the House of Rep-
8 resentatives is hereby directed to
transmit enrolled copies of this reso-
9 lution to the State Board of
Education and to the Commissioner of Ed-
10 ucation at 120 S.E. 10th Avenue, Topeka,
Kansas 66612-1182.
