9 AN ACT concerning the Kansas civil service act; relating to certain state 10 officers and employees in the classified and unclassified service there- 11 under; concerning the state board of indigents' defense services; 12 amending K.S.A. 22-4524 and repealing the existing section. 13 14 Be it enacted by the Legislature of the State of Kansas: 15 Section 1. K.S.A. 22-4524 is hereby amended to read as follows: 22- 16 4524. (a) There is hereby created the position of state director of indi- 17 gents' defense services. The director shall be in the unclassified service 18 under the Kansas civil service act, shall be appointed by the state board 19 of indigents' defense services and shall devote full time to the perform- 20 ance of the duties of the office of director. 21 (b) The state director of indigents' defense services, the assistant di- 22 rector, mitigation specialists and all attorneys appointed or employed by 23 the state board of indigents' defense services shall be in the unclassified 24 service under the Kansas civil service act. All other officers and employees 25 of the board shall be in the classified service. 26 (c) Each person who has been employed continuously for at least the 27 six-month period immediately prior to the effective date of this act who 28 is an officer or employee of the board, which is placed in the classified 29 service under the Kansas civil service act by this act, shall continue in 30 such position and shall attain permanent status in that classified position 31 without examination and without a probationary period. Such person shall 32 retain all retirement benefits earned prior to the effective date of this act 33 and such person's service shall be deemed to have been continuous. 34 Sec. 2. K.S.A. 22-4524 is hereby repealed. 35 Sec. 3. This act shall take effect and be in force from and after its 36 publication in the statute book.
